What is a Loopwheel?
A Loopwheel is a wheel with integral suspension, designed to reduce vibration and increase performance and provide greater comfort.
Loopwheels give you a smoother ride. They are more comfortable than standard wheels: the carbon springs absorb tiring vibration, as well as bumps and shocks. They’re designed for everyday use and are strong and durable. They don’t run as true as a spoked wheel but they’re a lot more comfortable.
Loopwheels for wheelchairs help you push over uneven streets, rough tracks and gravel paths more easily, and the carbon springs can give you extra power to get up or down kerbs. They reduce jolting and vibration, by as much as two thirds compared with a spoked wheel. Some customers tell us this helps them manage discomfort.
How does the Loopwheel technology work?
Loopwheel springs are made from a carbon composite material, carefully developed and tested to give optimum compression and lateral stability as well as strength and durability. Specially-designed connectors attach the springs to the hub and rim.
The three loops in each wheel work together as a self-correcting system. This spring system between the hub and the rim of the wheel provides suspension that constantly adjusts to uneven terrain, cushioning the rider from bumps and potholes in the road. In effect, the hub floats within the rim, adjusting constantly as shocks from an uneven road hit the rim of the wheel.
The spring configuration allows the torque to be transferred smoothly between the hub and the rim.
Which spring rate is right for me?
The springs use hi-tech carbon composite materials and are available in 2 spring strengths (Regular and Stiff). These rates will allow you to get the best comfort for your weight and the typical activities that you undertake.
The right tyre for the right job
This 507 wheel takes a larger, MTB style tyre, to bring the whole wheel with tyre to 24″. This size is a standard juvenile MTB size so a wide choice of tyres are available from online suppliers and bike shops, as an alternative to the Marathon Plus MTB tyre we supply.
