Who are Carbolife?

“Improving the everyday mobility and quality of life of wheelchair users with the help of our products – this is what motivates us. With this goal in mind, we – four engineers and friends – founded the Dresden based company CarboLife in 2013. The initial impetus towards giving serious thought to the mobility of wheelchair users came from joint activities and conversations with a wheelchair-riding friend.

These occasions opened our eyes for the development potential of handrims to improve the mobility of wheelchair users. Against this backdrop, we developed our CURVE handrim. It owes its perfect ergonomic fit to the imprints we created using modelling clay and which ideally represent the natural anatomy of the hand.

Striving towards our goal to offer every wheelchair user the handrim tailored to their individual needs, to date we have developed a range of innovative handrims in close cooperation with wheelchair users, physiotherapists and specialist dealers”.

Which Push Rim is right for me?

Carbolife have produced a range of push rims to cover those with full upper body function to those of us with limited hand and arm function.

The push rims range from bare aluminium, to the hybrid Gekko which has a rubber strip along the top surface, to the fully coated for those with limited dexterity.  Along with these variations in surface coating there are also various profile types to suit different hand sizes and shapes.

Do Carbolife pushrims require any maintenance?

Dirt, hand cream etc. can "glaze" the Tetra coating. It is therefore important that the handrims are cleaned regularly (if possible at least once a week) with a damp cloth + grease-dissolving cleaning agent. If the slippery layer of grease is difficult to remove, commercial disinfectants can also be used - also in combination with a scouring pad - to get the handrims clean again. This should make your handrims very grippy again.

The choice of cleaning method depends on the degree of soiling. So the normal weekly cleaning with grease dissolving detergent and if that doesn't work, disinfectant or isopropyl alcohol also in conjunction with a scouring pad.

  5. Good push rims that do make a difference to pushing!
    Review

Good lightweight push rims that really do make a difference to pushing, particularly on the uphills and in the wet! Only downside is that the black coating is very prone to scratches, the first time I took these out and the slightest brush up against a door frame and they're scratched so who knows what they'll look like in the months to come...

  8. I wish I'd bought them years ago
    Review

I bought some mountain bike wheels for my chair and they came with standard rims. Having mountain bike tyres was brilliant, they made my 'adventures' out on trails that used to be coal pits and railway lines so much easier. The problem was the rims, I found myself pushing on the tyres most of the time, I just used the rims for steering and downhills. It wasn't ideal and I was in constant pain in my thumbs. When I bashed up my last rims on a rocky slope I presumed it would just be a case of replacing them with the same kind again. However I started reading about the other rims available and I liked what I was reading. I was tempted by one set and phoned Spokz about them, they suggested I go on YouTube and read independent reviews on different rims. I did as suggested and decided that Gekko Standard pushrims sounded pretty perfect to me so I bought some. I've had them almost two weeks now and I can't praise them enough. The shape is such a natural fit in my hands. They are heavier than the others I had but that's only really noticeable when I'm changing my tyres to go out, when I am out there doesn't seem to be a difference. It's taken a bit of time to teach myself to use only the rims, it's just habit for me to push the tyres, but I'm getting there. It's not yet been two weeks but the pain has almost gone from my thumbs
  9. Best Push Rims by Far

  10. Brilliant all round
    Review

I have now been using the rims for just over a week now and they are brilliant they are light and easy on your hands the shape and placement of the rubber fits yore hand perfectly. I was using surge rims before because of the rubber and shape however the rubber had become nonexistent and so I had to look for new rims the carbolife gekko were recommended for there shape and the replacement rubber and I'm 100% glad I went with them it has made my pushing so much easier it's like the upgrade you wish you had got years ago and now can't live without. The service from spokz was also second to none I was contacted regarding my order having a issue and it was sorted within 24 hours also my order arrived quickly and before I was expecting it to would recommend not only the product but also the company
  11. Comfort in the palm of your hand.
    Review

I've been using my new Ottobock Zenit CLT folding chair for a couple of weeks now and really enjoying the gecko push rims. I'm relatively new to wheelchair life so all I've known are the standard aluminium rims with plastic coating. The gecko rims are truly the Rolls Royce upgrade. So much more push power and they seem to fit my hand like a glove. The rubber strip gives bite for your grip and is unobtrusive. I'm getting some for my rigid ZRA. Then look out, you'll only be seeing my dust.
  12. A quantum leap in comfort
    Review

Going from Surge pushrims to Geckos is another quantum leap in comfort. I love the feel of them in my hands and you get a good grip without the black mucky deposits I always got from the Surge rims. The high friction strip is wider and seems tougher than the Surge, though longer term use will reveal all. I understand the strip is kept on by its profiled shape, rather than stuck on as with the Surge (which soon starts peeling off). The fact that you can replace the strip is a bonus. I have quite large hands, and that might be a consideration; if you have small hands you might prefer something else. Also, they add a few mm more width to your chair compared with standard rims or Surge rims. An oddity I found with both Surge and Gecko pushrims is that they needed some adjustment to fit my wheels. This applied to both my Kuschall K4 and my TiLite ZRA. I had to bend the tabs in somewhat to make them fit. On the whole I would heartily recommend Geckos.
  13. Good All Round Fit
    Review

    Review

I have been using these new rims for a few days now, and I can tell you they are really, really good. The shape of the rims fit my hands perfectly and the "Replaceable" rubber strip for your thump is quite wide. Having spent the last 4 years using The Surge handrims, I can say they are certainly a step up.
